The site is mainly about using siphons made in Hungary before the regime change, but of course there are also modern solutions if you want to drink soda water.
Buying soda from a soda maker
If you live in Hungary, you can probably look for a company or enterpreneur who is making soda water in the area. I know, it’s not exactly a soda siphon, but it’s a good option if you don’t want to invest at all. In smaller towns you can often have soda delivered to your door if above a certain order quantity. Even in larger cities there are almost always companies where you can get bottled soda water. If you can’t find one, soda water is usually available in hypermarkets. However I would recommend this only as a last resort as it is worth supporting local entrepreneurs and it is also better for the environment to buy locally.
Making soda at home
If you want to make soda water from tap water in your home, there are currently several types of siphons available in Hungary. A few things that you may want to consider:
- Products made from stainless steel are more modern than their aluminium counterparts.
- A larger, 2-3 litres siphon, is only a good choice if you consume the contents quickly. It will not fit comfortably in every fridge, and carrying it around is a hassle.
- It is best to choose an easily serviceable product that has spare parts available to buy and which you can repair yourself.
Commercially available soda siphons in Hungary, in alphabetical order:
iSi
The Austrian company iSi is known worldwide for its whipping siphons, but fewer people know that they also produce soda siphons. The traditional stainless type is has a 1 litre (1 quart) capacity, but they also make a mid-century style plastic siphon with a mesh cover called Sodamaker Classic.

LISS
Mainly known for charger production, LISS also produces 1 and 2 litre (1 and 2 quarts) soda siphons in four finishes. The design is perhaps the closest to the traditional Hungarian aluminium siphon, but the stainless steel material makes it more modern.

Mosa
One of the world’s largest gas charger manufacturers, Mosa of Taiwan, also produces a 1 litre (1 quart) soda siphon and a steel soda maker.

Soda maker appliances
Although slightly offtopic on this site, it is necessary to also mention the more common desktop soda machines. Soda machines are more convenient and cheaper to use than soda siphons. However, the machines do not keep the produced soda water under pressure, so the bubbliness of the water disappears fast, similar to carbonated mineral water bought in bottles.
